State Lesson, 2015, digital video transferred from 8 film, 4’ 50”.
In 1960’s, a teacher who had been assigned from the western part of the country to a primary school in a pathless village accomplished his/her compulsory service and recorded the students who were writing their names on the blackboard and posed at attention via 8 mm camera. The teacher wished to remember the names of the children with their facial images simultaneously. What does this piece of film, which was found in the garbage as an object of remembrance, remind us? The school disciplines the bodies through teaching and imposes a series of predefined gestures. Writing names on the board, waiting at attention, holding the head up high, keeping in, coupling up the feet create obedient bodies through putting the bodies and gestures into relations. The bodies turn into objects and targets of power and a machine, which is overpowered and ready to be used, comes to exist from a body that does not have form and skill. What is remembered becomes the memory of the bodies that were disciplined rather than their images and names. The name list embedded at the end of the film is the names of the children who died during the war in the region after 90s referring to the children who do not have bodies now but made up of only names and statistics.

1960’larda ülkenin uzak bir köşesinden bir ilkokulun Batı’dan atanan öğretmeni görevi tamamlandığında öğrencilerini hatırlamak amacıyla onları sırayla tahtaya kaldırarak isimlerini bir dikdörtgen içine yazdırıp hazırolda poz verdirerek 8mm kamerasıyla kaydeder. Çocukların isimlerini suretleriyle birlikte hatırlamak istemektedir. Çöpten bulunan bir hatırlama nesnesi olarak kaydedilmiş bu buluntu film parçası 50 yıl sonra bize neyi hatırlatır. Okul bir dizi tanımlanmış jestin öğretilmesi ve dayatılması yoluyla bedenleri disipline eder. Yazı yazmak, hazırolda beklemek, başı dik tutmak, karnı içeri çekmek, ayakları birleştirmek bedenleri ve jestleri bağıntılar içine sokarak itaatkâr bedenler yaratır. Bedenler iktidarların nesnesine ve hedefine dönüşür, şekli olmayan, becerisi olmayan bir bedenden, boyun eğdirilmiş, sürekli olarak kullanıma hazır hale getirilmiş, tabi kılınabilen, kullanılabilen geliştirilebilen bir makina ortaya çıkar. Hatırlanan şey çocukların imajları ve isimlerinden çok disipline edilmiş bedenlerin hatırasına dönüşür. Filmin sonuna bitişen 90’lardan sonra bölgede savaş yüzünden ölen çocukların listesi de artık bedenleri olmayan bir isimden ve istatistikten ibaret çocuklara gönderme yapar.
